Historic Houses and Gardens
The Reverend Gilbert White, reputedly the father of English
natural history and author of the famous 'Natural History of
Selbourne' lived at the Wakes in Selborne. He and his brother
created the famous 'Zig-Zag' path at Selborne Common (now under
the National Trust's care and protection). Gilbert
White's House is open for viewing and the lovely tranquil
garden is being restored to its 18th century form.
In Chawton you'll find the charming Jane
Austen's House, where she wrote and revised her six famous
novels, including 'Sense and Sensibility' and 'Pride and Predjudice'.
John Keats was inspired to write some of his finest verse
in the Chapel at Stansted House near Rowlands Castle.
The Petersfield Physic Garden is a small walled garden
recently planted with 17th century plants, herb garden and orchard
whereas Stauton Country Park offers a completely different horticultural
experience.
The Abbey of Our Lady and St John at Beech, near Alton,
is set in quiet and tranquil grounds and provides a delightfully
peaceful spot, a place for both physical and spiritual refreshment.
