Countryside
Much of southern East Hampshire is designated an Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty and we are to be included in the
Southdown National Park.
Long
distance footpaths cross East Hampshire coming from north,
south, east and west and the area has around 500 miles of
footpaths and bridleways.
The
ancient Pilgrim's Way, once a route for Bronze Age traders
and later the Roman Legion, passes through Alton. The Staunton
Way, the Hangers Way and the South Downs Way meet just south
of Peterfield.
Self
guided literary walks trace the footsteps of famous writers
and poets connected with East Hampshire: Jane
Austen, William Cobbett, W H Hudson, Edward Thomas, Flora
Thompson and Gilbert White.
In
addition to walking and rambling, at the Alice Holt Woodland
Park near Farnham you can hire bicycles and the Queen Elizabeth
Country Park near Petersfield offers facilities such as mountain
bike hire and routes, horserider trails, fishing, wooded barbecue
sites and adventure play trails.
